TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national badminton team will not compete in the upcoming international tournaments held in India which consists of the 2022 India Open, Syed Modi India International, and Odisha Open over health factors regarding athletes’ stamina and lack of recovery period. All three tournaments are slated for January.

The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) head of development Rionny Mainaky announced in an official statement that “The performance of the main team, second tier, and junior will likely not play at their maximum potential. They had just entered recovery from constant and high intensity tournaments from September to December.”

Citing Antaranews.com, Mainaky said the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays will also have a great effect on the athletes as training sessions will not be able to be optimized. He said badminton athletes temporarily residing at the PBSI headquarters in East Jakarta have been permitted to return home and to their respective clubs.

He also mentioned that apart from the badminton athletes, they face challenges in the organizational aspect as the country is preparing for the national selection processes in January 2022. This is deemed a major event that is annually participated by hundreds of athletes from 34 provinces.
