TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian badminton players Apriyani Rahayu (Apri) and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti made history on Sunday, August 27, 2023, by claiming the first silver medal for Indonesia’s women’s doubles in 28 years, at the 2023 BWF World Championships which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Indonesian pair, who ranks 12th in the world ranking, finished runner-up after losing to world’s number one Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China with the score of 16-21, 12-21 in a final match in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Apri/Fadia became the third Indonesian women's doubles pair to win a silver medal at the world championships after Verawaty Fadjirin/Imelda Wiguno (1980) and Finarsih/Lili Tampi (1995).

Apri said she was grateful and proud of the results, adding that it needed a long process to get this far.

“Before the World Championships, our performance was poor […] We promised to play better and finally we achieved great results here,” she said in a Sunday statement.

Apri/Fadia made their debut as a pair last year. In less than a year, they already stood in the world’s top 15 ranking after winning two titles from nine tournaments they played in 2022.

Apri, who made history by winning the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s doubles gold with her former partner Greysia Polii, won the top position with the younger partner, Fadia, in the BWF World Tour Super 750 Malaysia Open and Super 500 Singapore Open last year.

They have not won any titles this year.
