TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State power company PLN will gradually replace the use of coal in power plants with biomass or co-firing. By 2025, the portion of coals to be replaced would reach 10 to 20 percent.

"We hope that by 2025, three to six percent of the renewable energy mix will come from biomass," PLN's EVP for electricity system planning Edwin Nugraha Putra said in a written statement, Friday, December 10.

This is one of PLN's efforts to accelerate the inclusion of clean energy in the 35,000 MW Program. In addition to co-firing, PLN's next step would be to replace Diesel Power Plants that are not connected to large-scale electricity grids in remote districts.

The diesel plants would be replaced by solar plants, targeting a solar capacity of two to four Giga Watts (GW). PLN will also operate wind/turbine power generators with a total capacity of 600 MW, geothermal plants with 1.4 GW capacity, and 4.9 GW from hydropower.

According to Edwin, these various initiatives help PLN save up in capital expenditure (capex), thus allowing the company to pursue the 23 percent clean energy portion by 2025.
