TEMPO.CO, JakartaActing Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti reported that the January exports for coal were sluggish. Throughout the month, coal exports were recorded at US$2.41 billion.

"The value of coal exports fell by US$590.1 million or around 19.68 percent," she said in a press conference on Thursday.

On a month-on-month basis, the value of coal exports fell by 19.68 percent, while on a year-on-year basis, the value fell by 29.76 percent.

Amalia said that two things caused the decline; volume and price

She revealed that the most significant decline in Indonesian coal exports occurred in China and India. The value of coal exports to China fell by 25.08 percent, while exports to India fell by 17.11 percent.

On the other hand, the value of palm oil exports grew significantly on a month-on-month basis, amounting to 18.89 percent. On a year-on-year basis, the exports fell by 11.54 percent from US$1.96 billion in January 2023.

The export value of other leading non-oil and gas commodities, namely iron and steel, experienced positive growth, year-on-year and month-on-month. In January 2024, the export value was recorded at US$2.31 billion.

Amalia said that the export value of these three commodities had a fairly large impact on non-oil and gas exports. "The export value of these three commodities contributed around 33.72 percent of Indonesia's total non-oil and gas exports in January 2024."
