Floods Submerge 9 Regions in South Sulawesi, Thousands of People Evacuated

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three-day rains caused flooding in nine regions of South Sulawesi Province. The nine regions are Makassar, Maros, Pangkajene Islands, Barru, Sidenreng Rappang, Soppeng, Wajo, Gowa, and Jeneponto.

South Sulawesi Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Muhammad Firda said floods hit a number of sub-districts of Makassar City, namely Biringkanaya, Tamalanrea, Manggala, Panakukang, Tamalate, and Rappocini.

BPBD also recorded that 3,206 residents are evacuated to 37 refugee camps in the city.

Other sub-districts hit by the floods are Balocci, Pangkajene, Bungoro, Minasatene, Labakkang, Ma'rang, Sigeri, Mandalle, and Tondongtallasa in Pangkajene Islands Regency, affecting around 5,000 residents.

In Barru Regency, flooding occurred in the sub-districts of Mallusetasi, Soppeng Riaja, Balusu, Barru, Tante Riaja, and Tanete Rilau. Meanwhile, in Soppeng Regency, the disaster killed one person and affected 5,786 families in the sub-districts of Lalabata, Dontri-donri, Gandra, Lilirilau, Citta, Marioriawa, and Liliriaja.

Additionally, floods devastated sub-districts of Tempe, Sabbangparu, and Belawa in Wajo Regency, and affected around 1,000 families. The floodwater submerged nine schools, five health facilities, six places of worship, and rice fields.
