TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - 13.8 tons of Indonesian tempeh chips have been exported to Japan, the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka reported today. The chips derived from one of Indonesia’s quintessential staple foods will be sold at Gyomu Supa, one of the largest supermarket chains in Japan.

The export came from the trade between PT Arumia Kharisma Indonesia and the Kobe Bussan Co.Ltd and will be distributed across Kantai and Kanto regions.

“I am proud of the hard work of PT Arumia Kharisma Indonesia that maintained their quality and consistency for their processed tempeh product and can be considered as the pioneer for Indonesian tempeh export to Japan,” said Diana ES Sutikno, the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka, Antaranews reported.

Meanwhile, Kobe Bussan Co. Ltd President Hirokazu Numata, according to a report, initially did not expect the Japanese market would be enthusiastic towards tempeh and is the reason why they signed a new contract to import tempeh chips in a larger number.

Japan does not only import tempeh but also produces it domestically by an Indonesian diaspora in Sariraya Tempe and Rusto’s Tempeh.
