Top 10 Fish-Producing Countries in the World

TEMPO.CO, JakartaFish is a commodity that is in great demand by the public. Apart from tasting delicious, fish meat contains nutrients, such as protein and omega-3, which are beneficial for the body. As the main source of protein for billions of people around the world, fish plays a vital role in ensuring global food security.

The increasing amount of fish consumption makes various countries compete in the fishing industry to meet consumer needs and support their economies. Quoted from various sources, the following is a list of the 10 largest fish producing countries in the world:

1. China

China leads the list of the world's largest fish producers. With its wealth of aquatic resources and rapidly developing fishing industry, China dominates around 40 percent of global supply, as reported by Statista, the total volume of fish and seafood production in China in 2022 reached 68.69 million metric tons.

2. Indonesia

Indonesia is also one of the largest fish producing countries in the world. According to data from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, in 2022, fish production in Indonesia reached 24.85 million tons. This production consists of aquaculture of 16.87 million tons and capture fisheries of 7.99 tons. Meanwhile, in 2023, fisheries production is targeted to reach 30.37 million tons.

3. India

India is the third largest fish producing country, contributing 8 percent to global fish production. Fish production in 2021-2022 reached 16.24 million tons, consisting of marine fish production of 4.12 million tons and fish cultivation products of 12.12 million tons. The diversity of fish types and varied fishing methods makes India a major player in the fishery industry.

4. Vietnam

With a coastline stretching 3,600 kilometers, Vietnam is one of the largest fish producers in the world. According to Visual Capitalist data, in 2021, Vietnam produced 8.2 million tons of fish. The majority of fish production in this country is produced through cultivation.

5. Peru

A country in South America, known for its rich marine fisheries resources. Peru is ranked fifth with fish production of 6.7 million tons in 2021. Peru is a key player in providing fish for the international market, with anchovies as the main commodity.

6. Russia

Russia is the country with the largest territory in the world and also has large fisheries resources. Even though most of the country has cold temperatures, Russia is one of the largest fish producing countries in the world. As of 2021, Russia produced 5.4 million tons of fish.

7. United States

With an area surrounded by two oceans, the United States has a fairly large fishing industry. America also has one of the largest water zones in the world covering more than 11.4 million square kilometers. In 2021, the country produced 4.7 million metric tons of fish.

8. Bangladesh

Apart from relying on agriculture, Bangladesh relies on fisheries as the backbone of the economy. As one of the largest fish producing countries in the world, Bangladesh has a significant role in world fish production. in 2021, Bangladesh occupies 8th position with production of 4.6 million tons of fish.

9. Norway

Norway, located in northern Europe, is known for its high-quality marine fishing industry. Abundant salmon production makes it a major player in providing high-quality marine fish to the global market. in 2021, Norway managed to produce 4.2 million tons of fish.

10. Japan

As a country famous for its seafood, Japan is one of the largest marine fish producing countries in the world. According to Statista, Japan's fishing industry produced around 3.9 million tons of fish in 2022. Fishing and aquaculture in Japan have consistently generated more than 1.5 trillion Japanese yen per year for the past few years.
