TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission III House of Representatives (DPR) Deputy Speaker Sahroni in a statement on Friday criticized the regulation that effectively bans cyclists from entering Jakarta’s main streets, specifically in areas that impose the ‘odd-even number plate’ regulation.

“The banning of cyclists from operating over bike lanes must be reviewed again for a number of reasons,” he wrote in his statement.

He also questioned the reason why the Metro Jaya Police had imposed the ban, which is said to prevent cyclists from gathering in large crowds.

“If the fear is based on road bike users creating crowds, the fact is that in the field road bike users only use the road until 06:30 AM and do not use the bike lane. So, I guess the ban is not right,” said the House deputy.

Another aspect that led him to deem the ban discriminatory is that it is imposed at all times, which effectively also bans cyclists that use bicycles as daily transportation and not just for recreational purposes.

“It would not be fair for cyclists that use bicycles for work and street vendors on bicycles. So I think that this regulation is discriminatory,” said Sahroni.
