TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police traffic director, Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo, on Wednesday announced that cyclists operating outside of the available bike lanes will be disciplined and receive verbal warnings.

“Starting from this morning at 06:30, we mobilized a team of personnel to discipline cyclists operating outside bike lanes over the 06:30 [time limit],” Sambodo confirmed on June 2.

The operating hours for cyclists traveling  over non-intended bike lanes have been set from 05:00 - 06:30 on weekdays, following a meeting between the Metro Jaya Police and the Jakarta Administration. Cyclists who are found to ride their bikes outside the lanes will face sanctions and be ticketed.

However, Sambodo Purnomo acknowledged that the new rule is a precedent and is carefully formulated. The regulators also consider to provide special lanes for ‘road bikes’ that travel above the average speeds of cyclists on other types of bicycles.

“This could be the first time Indonesia will conduct stops on non-motorized transportation, namely bicycles,” said the police commissioner.
