TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) transported oxygen weighing 80 tons on Thursday, free of charge, from Jakarta's Tanjung Priok Station to Kalimas Station, Surabaya.

"PT KAI will fully support the government and try to make the best contribution in dealing with Covid-19," said the company's President Director Didiek Hartantyo in a written statement, August 5.

The oxygen was imported from Singapore in a deal with Indonesian Ministry of Health. It was stored in 4 ISO Tank wagons, each containing 20 tons.

Didiek said they have obtained a permit from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to transport Hazardous and Toxic Materials (B3) category DG class 2 in the form of gas.

Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono said delivery of oxygen by train reduces travel time. It will take 24-36 hours by bus.

He explained that before the pandemic, the oxygen demand for the Java-Bali region was recorded at 400 tons a day. Currently, especially when there was a surge in Covid-19 cases some time ago, the need for oxygen has increased to 4-5 times.
