West Sulawesi Earthquake Death Toll Climbs, BNPB Reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Friday announced the death toll from the magnitude 6.2 earthquake in West Sulawesi has increased to 34, with the highest recorded from Mamuju.

“There are 26 deaths from Mamuju Regency and eight from Majene Regency,” wrote Radiya Jati, the BNPB head of disaster data, information, and communications in a written statement today.

Raditya said there were currently 10 refugee camps spread across Majene in the villages of Kota Tinggi, Lombong, Kayu Angin, Petabean, Deking, Mekata, Kabiraan, Lakkidang, Lembang, Limbua, Ulumanda, Malunda, and Sendana.

Meanwhile, Mamuju has five refugee camps spread across Mamuju District and Simboro District. Electricity in the region affected by the earthquake remains inoperable while cellular services are still unstable in the two regencies.
