Police Hospital Receives 16 Body Bags from Sriwijaya Air Crash Site

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 16 bodies of victims of Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182 that crashed into the sea on Saturday, Jan. 9, had been brought to the Raden Said Sukanto Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta.

The police spokesman Brig. Gen. Rusdi Hartono said the team had received the body bags.

“As of 09:00 WIB, the DVI (Disaster Victim Identification) Team has received 16 body bags and three other bags containing the plane debris,” said Rusdi in an online press conference on Monday, Jan. 11.

In addition, the DVI team had also received 40 DNA samples from victims' families. Rusdi outlined that 14 samples were obtained at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital, 24 samples from Pontianak, one sample from East Java, and the other sample from South Sulawesi.

According to him, the police DVI Team would begin the identification process of the 16 body bags, as well as other matters related to the accident.

As widely reported, a Sriwijaya Air plane serving the Jakarta-Pontianak route lost contact shortly after taking off from Soekarno Hatta Airport on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2021. The ill-fated jet crashed into the sea off Lancang Island and Laki Island in Seribu Islands.
