Sriwijaya Air Crash; Rescue Team Detects Black Box Signal, Finds Turbine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Search and rescue team discovered significant findings during the search for passengers and debris of the Sriwijaya Air plane that crashed into the sea minutes after taking off from Jakarta. The team detected the black box signal of the plane with flight number SJ182.
The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Chief Bagus Puruhito said the search for the black box would be focused on today, Jan. 11.
“We are informed that KRI Rigel (a research vessel) detects emergency signals from two points believed to be the plane’s black box,” said Bagus in JICT, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, Sunday, Jan. 10.
Bagus clarified that the findings must be confirmed again. However, the two distress signals emerged in the areas that had been marked as the location for the search of the missing plane.
Other than the signals, the search team found turbines allegedly belonged to the crashed jet. Sriwijaya Air serving the Jakarta-Pontianak route lost contact four minutes after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta, Cengkareng, on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2021.
