TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The upcoming New Year's Eve celebration in Jakarta will likely be quiet as the city administration and the Metro Police prohibited any kind of events that attract a large crowd in a bid to prevent Covid-19 transmission.

Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said the police will not issue a permit for public gatherings on the 2021 New Year's Eve. “We are still in Covid-19 pandemic. We ensure there will be no permit for any crowd on new year’s eve,” said Yusri in the Police HQ on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The police officers have coordinated with managers of tourist destinations in Jakarta that usually hold the New Year's Eve celebration, including Ancol and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah or TMII. Thus, there will be no event to celebrate the new year in the area.

Ancol and TMII will close to the public at 5 p.m. “It will be closed in the afternoon so there will be no crowds,” Yusri added.

In the coordination meeting on Covid-19 handling on Monday, Dec. 14, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan said the government will tighten the public activity during Christmas and New Year holidays.

“This is not Large Scale Social Restriction (PSBB), but a measured and controlled tightening,” Luhut said.
