Kadin Jakarta Allows New Year's Eve Celebration on Conditions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) chairperson Diana Dewi hoped that the city residents would still go on a vacation during the year-end holidays and enjoy the New Year's Eve celebration.

“We hope that people will go on vacation and celebrate the new year. But the most important, do not go abroad,” said Diana on Sunday, Dec. 13.

Although the Jakarta government has prohibited the tourism industry from holding new year's celebration events, Kadin argued that people could still spend the year-end holidays as long as they apply the health protocols dubbed 3M, namely wearing face masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.

Diana mentioned an example that residents could book a hotel room with their families to celebrate the upcoming new year’s eve together.

According to her, the city administration did not ban people from having the celebration as long as it only involves their inner family circle and complies with the health protocol against Covid-19 transmission.

“Because New Year’s Eve celebration is vital to boost the tourism industry which has been weakening for the past nine months,” she added. “What’s important is do not go abroad.”

Previously, the Jakarta provincial government banned tourist attractions, hotels, and restaurants from holding New Year's Eve celebration events that potentially attract large crowds. The circular was issued by the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency in accordance with the Transitional Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) policy.
