TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The final draft of the omnibus job creation law that the House of Representatives (DPR) passed on October 5 has yet been published up until Sunday, October 11, which former Universitas Pertahanan rector Professor Syarifuddin Tippe argues had fueled the widespread rejection from members of the public.

“The massive dismissal against the omnibus job creation law is understandable since the beginning of the process was not massively disseminated,” said Syarifuddin to Tempo on Sunday, October 11.

Apart from the lack of transparency from legislators, the passing of the law was profusely done amidst the public’s struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic, which he argues is not an ideal situation for the House to pass a controversial bill.

“Every law that is made is most oftenly faced by rejection, which is why public dialogue is important to address issues hovering in social media,” said Tippe.

Moreover, the professor regrets that the speech made by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had only emerged after widespread protests ended in chaos in Jakarta and several other regions.

He believes that if the president addressed the matter to the public before the job creation law garnered rejections, the public may understand the reason both the House and government are adamant to pass the law to potentially prevent protests that caused losses to public facilities.

The professor of Jakarta State University’s strategic management of business and economy called for the government to view the incident as an evaluation and understand the stakes of issuing public policies that affect millions of people.
