TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi held a limited meeting to evaluate the 2024 Eid homecoming at the Merdeka Palace on Monday, May 6, 2024. Jokowi delivered several notes on the homecoming implementation.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Muhadjir Effendy said in a press statement that Jokowi ordered that the number of rest areas be increased. Additional rest areas that have been discussed include kilometer 97 towards Jakarta Merak.
The President also asked for improvement of the facilities at existing rest areas. "In each existing rest area, facilities must be improved," said Muhadjir after the meeting. The limited meeting was also attended by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya, and Deputy Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara.
Muhadjir said the second issue brought up by Jokowi was revitalizing the anchor port in Situbondo as a regular port, in addition to handling homecoming flows. Java travelers usually use this port to cross to West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and several small islands around Madura.
On the same occasion, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya said that 242 million people participated in Eid homecoming this year. Budi noted that incidents decreased by 8 percent, deaths decreased by 12 percent, and minor injuries down by 10 percent. However, travelers experiencing serious injuries increased by 33 percent.
Budi did not provide details of the data he mentioned. However, he quoted a survey by two government agencies, Statistics Indonesia and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, which stated that the overall public satisfaction over homecoming was 89 percent and for the free homecoming program was 91 percent.
"The President reminded us that (free homecoming program) must go from South Sumatra to Bengkulu, from Riau to West Sumatra. This will increase people's desire for homecoming," said Budi.
