TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The capital city is ready to impose the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) protocol on Friday, April 10, to further cut the chain of virus transmissions after the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak claimed 141 lives as of Wednesday, April 8.

The large-scale social restriction differs from the ongoing social distancing policy in terms of the level of enforcement, as the PSBB will be more strict and will act upon residents who violate the public group gathering limit. Here are 4 aspects overseen by the PSBB.

  1. 14-day period with possible extension

According to Anies, the status of PSBB will be effective for 14-days since April 10, 2020. Which means the social restriction will last until April 23. However, it can be extended depending on the situation that develops.

The main reason for the two-week period adheres to the Health Minister’s Decree No.HK.01.07/Menkes/239/2020 that says it corresponds to the longest incubation period of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

  1. Complete closure of public facilities

The large-scale social restriction will also close all of the city’s public facilities such as public parks, meeting halls, sporting arenas, and museums. Only eight business sectors will be permitted to continue operating during the PSBB that comprise the healthcare sector, food, and beverage, energy sector, communications, banking, and finances, logistics, and strategic business sectors that are crucial to fulfill people’s daily needs.

  1. Public transport gets restricted

The Jakarta administration will impose an operational limit and reduce the number of passengers of the city’s entire public transports during the large-scale social restriction. “Take the example of a bus that can be filled with 50 people, now that bus can only accommodate 25,” said Anies.

As for operational hours, each and every public transportation will only be available from 06:00 - 18:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Meanwhile, the use of personal transportation will not be restricted as long as users continue to heed to the call for physical distancing, which will also apply for vehicles entering Jakarta.

  1. Violators will be sanctioned

Anies Baswedan said that law enforcers will uphold the PSBB status starting this Friday and reminds that military or police personnel in the field are; “permitted to hand immediate sanctions.” The governor mainly refers to outdoor social gatherings and limits a gathering to a maximum of five people.
