Governor Talks about Medics Ostracized by Society amid Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Governor of Yogyakarta Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X sheds light on the unfortunate issue where doctors and healthcare workers are being ostracized by people due to unjustified fears of contamination amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The governor addressed this issue after holding a meeting with hospital management at the Governor’s office complex on Monday, April 6.
“The hospital management revealed that they had to find temporary housing for its doctors, nurses, and other medical workers because they are not able to return home. [They] are seen as virus carriers,” said Sri Sultan.
The astonishing fact bewildered the governor and said that he cannot fathom the mindset of people who think living next to doctors, nurses, or other healthcare workers is a health hazard. “We certainly don’t need to be that prejudiced,” he said.
Moreover, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X called for a substantial change of mindset from the people ousting doctors and nurses in the front line of the coronavirus (COVID-19) battle in Indonesia. He also asserts that healthcare workers have family members at home, which they would certainly not put in danger if they were truly a health risk.
