TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy chairman of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Alexander Marwata, demanded the public to not worry about the existence of a supervisory board.

“If a member of the board hinders [the commission’s work], I will inform it to reporters. Don’t worry,” said Alex jokingly at his office, Jakarta, Wednesday, December 18.

Alex, who was selected again as the anti-graft body’s commissioner for the next period, made the statement in response to candidate names of the supervisory body.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said those who will serve as the supervisory board came from various backgrounds such as judges, prosecutors, former commission's chairs, economists, academicians, and criminal law experts. “Let’s just wait. I ensure they are good people,” Alex added.

A source from a law enforcement institution revealed that among the candidates include supreme court judge Artidjo Alkostar, a former commissioner at anti-graft body Taufiequrachman Ruki and judge Albertina Ho.

The supervisory board will be inaugurated during the inauguration of new commissioners of the 2019-2023 period on Friday, December 20. The board is established under the mandate of the newly-amended KPK Law.

Many anti-corruption activists rejected the establishment of the supervisory board. The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) opined members of the board will likely hamper the commission’s work in combating grafts.
