TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo ensured the government would cut the bureaucracy by simplifying the ranks of echelon starting next year. By this reduction, he added, it would be replaced with artificial intelligence (AI).

“We are presently having echelon 1, 2, 3, and 4. Echelon 3 and 4 will be cut off, and I have asked Minister [of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform, Tjahjo Kumolo] to replace it with AI," said the President at the Ritz Carlton Ballroom, Jakarta, Thursday, November 28.

He believed that the use of AI would expedite the bureaucracy. According to him, the matter would be listed in the omnibus law which would be proposed to the House of Representatives (DPR).

Previously, State Secretary Minister Pratikno said the plan to trim echelon was aimed at optimizing the functional position in ministries.

“That does not mean a massive layoff and drop in employees’ welfare. We will expand the functional position,” said Pratikno in the presidential palace complex, Jakarta, Friday, November 8.
