TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, said that the government is set to conduct an inquiry on the existence of a phantom village - a fictitious village - that initially was qualified to receive government village funds up to Rp1 billion.

“We will hunt those responsible behind the fictitious village and arrest them once they are found,” said the president at the Jakarta International Expo on November 6.

He defended that Indonesia has a vast amount of regions of 514 districts and cities, added with the total amount of villages that is said to reach 74,800 across the country.

“From Sabang to Merauke, from Miangas to Rote Island, that is not an easy task,” said Jokowi.

Prior to the president’s statement, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani announced that she is set to mobilize an investigation on the fictitious village.

“We heard about it right after the Cabinet was formed, we will later investigate it,” said Sri Mulyani who suspects that this illegal practice is meant to dupe the government into allocating Rp1 billion for a non-existent village.
