Religious Affairs Ministry Bans Veil and Short Trousers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Zainut Tauhid said that the ban on veil and short trousers for Civil Servants only applies within the Ministry of Religious Affairs Ministry territory. Zainut asked for the public not to respond exaggeratedly.
"It is just for order and enforce discipline to the officers in the Religious Affairs Ministry. So it should not be responded emotionally, exaggerantly, and full of suspicious," Zainut said in a written statement on Saturdy, November 2, 2019.
Zainut argued that steps to maintain order and discipline are normal actions and is part of improvement activities for civil servants to comply with predetermined rules. Zainut believed that the ongoing issue should not be linked with violation of a person's private rights, let alone with freedom of religion.
"Because in such policing and discipline enforcement action, it is confirmed that not one religious teaching, private rights, or a persons' human rights in practicing a certain religion is violated," Zainut said.
Provision on Civil Servant, Police, and Army uniform, according to Zainut, had already existed and continue to promote esthetics, ethics, and that it does not contradict religious teachings. Therefore, the provision must be adhered by Civil Servants.
