TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 956 aftershocks jolted Kairatu, Ambon as of Thursday, October 3, at 03:00 p.m. after the region was rocked by a powerful earthquake on Sept. 26, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

"As many as 104 aftershocks are felt [by the people]," said the agency’s Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation head Daryono.

On September 26, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck Kairatu at 08:46 Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT). The tremor was felt up to the level V of MMI scale, damaging buildings and claiming lives. Thousands of people are still displaced over the fear of more aftershocks.

Since the powerful jolt hit, the number of aftershocks remained volatile. BMKG ensured the source of the quake in Kairatu, Haruku, Masohi, and Ambon was related to the active structure of the Kawa Horizontal Fault Line.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Agus Wibowo, as quoted from the agency’s official website, recorded that the quake has affected 115,290 people and destroyed 6,184 houses.
