TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The smog from forest and land fires in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan thickened on Sunday, September 15. Even during the day, drivers had to turn the head and tail lights of their cars to prevent accidents.

The Palangka Raya Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecaster Lian Andriani said that visibility was only around 300-600 meters.

"As for wind speed it is below 10 km, calm and could not clear out the existing smoke," she said.

Thick haze prompted the Central Kalimantan Government instructing schools to close since Friday, September 13.

Central Kalimantan Education Agency chief Slamet Winaryo said this was done to prevent students from getting sick because of the smoke, which had reached dangerous levels.

"The school holidays due to smoke are adjusted to the haze levels in their respective areas," he said.
