TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 4.6 magnitudes on the Richter Scale has rocked most areas of Bali, East Java, and Lombok today, July 24. Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the quake did not trigger a tsunami.

The quake occurred at 8.98 degrees south longitude and 114.17 degrees east longitude in the Indian Ocean.

“Precisely in the sea, 84 kilometers southwest of Jembrana, Bali,” said the Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Early Warning Information, Daryono, in a written statement, Wednesday, July 24.

The quake was recorded at a depth of 71 kilometers and was categorized as an intermediate one. “It is caused by activities in Indo-Australia subduction zone that penetrates under the Eurasian plate,” Daryono explained.

The natural event was found to have been triggered by an oblique-thrust fault, as shown in the analysis on the quake mechanism.

The tremor was felt in Kuta, Bali at IV MMI level, in Denpasar, Banyuwangi, and Jember at III MMI level, as well as in Gianyar, Tabanan, and North Lombok at II MMI level.

Reports said that many people in Kuta and Badung, Bali, and southern Banyuwangi were panic and running out of their homes following the sudden earthquake. BMKG noted there was no aftershock as of 09:00 local time.
