TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government is advocating for the establishment of a Global Water Fund during the 10th World Water Forum, which is set to take place on May 18-25 in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Herry Trisaputra Zuna, Coordinator of the Sustainable Water Financing Sub-theme of the forum who is also Director General of Public Works and Housing Infrastructure Financing, explained that the Global Water Fund is pivotal in addressing budget imbalances and hastening the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which is to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030.

“At present, 2.2 billion people in the world cannot access clean water. The Global Water Fund, which is projected to cater to water infrastructure needs, water-related crises mitigation, climate change adaptation, and monitoring mechanisms, represents a tangible step to overcome global water issues,” Herry said in a press release on Tuesday, April 30.

As part of its efforts to promote investment and ensure the provision of clean water throughout the archipelago, the Indonesian government has established the Indonesian Water Fund (IWF). “The IWF is estimated to operate funding of up to US$1 billion for clean water projects,” he said.

During the world's largest international water forum, the Indonesian government will also present four vital missions. One of these is the establishment of a centralized network in the Asia Pacific region, specifically targeting water security, climate change, and environmental research.

The other missions include forging partnerships with institutions, academics, research organizations, and other international institutions, establishing a consortium focusing on data centers, and coordinating and implementing various multi-stakeholder efforts to create a declaration or initiative related to global water issues.

Furthermore, Indonesia is advocating for the establishment of World Lakes Day during the 10th World Water Forum to promote the sustainability of water resources.
