TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy rains in areas of Mount Sinabung, Karo Regency, North Sumatra have resulted in cold lava flows in a number of villages in Sinabung starting Wednesday afternoon until late hours, July 10. The cold lava flows disconnected roads from Selandi Village to Perbaji and Kuta Buluh in Sukatendel Village.

Karo Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) chief Martin Sitepu said that cold lava flow caused mud floods in people’s residences, especially in Kutambaru Village.

“Five houses and one health center of KutaMbaru Village are inundated by cold mud. Thankfully, there’s no casualty,” Sitepu told Tempo.

Cold lava flows also hit Lau Bakerah and cut off roads. However, Karo administration instantly cleared the way using heavy equipment. “Villagers of Kuta Buluh and Perbaji can still pass the road,” Sitepu added.

Despite no casualties in the natural event, he went on, a woman, 17, was carried away but she could be saved and survived.

A villager of Kuta Buluh Abel Sembiring said that the cold lava flows hit the area due to rainfall in the peak of Mount Sinabung. The rains, he said, brought volcanic materials to rivers and spilled over to local residences up to 40 centimeters in height.
