TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) revealed numerous reasons that drove multiple children to take part in the May 22 rally that turned into chaotic riots in Central Jakarta.

KPAI Commissioner Jasa Putra said that there were a number of children who he asked at the Social Ministry’s safe house were invited by their religious teacher.

“There were children from Tasik who were brought to Jakarta by their ngaji (Quran recitation) teacher,” said Jasra at his office yesterday.

KPAI listed at least 52 children who were apprehended in the May 22 riots but are now placed in the safe house run by the social ministry. KPAI specifically visited these children to understand what motivated them to travel to Jakarta to only be involved in a riot.

Moreover, KPAI Chairman Susanto saw the case from a different angle and connected the link between young kids and their dependence toward their Islamic teacher, either from an academic environment or from the neighborhood they live at. This dependence makes the kids vulnerable to such cases.

He strongly called for ngaji teachers to don't involve children in activities related to politics because it is basically a violation against the Constitution.
