Child Protection Commission: Cases of Violence against Children Up 30% This Year; Mostly at Home, School

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia's National Commission for Child Protection said that throughout 2023 there were 3,547 complaints regarding cases of child rights or violence. This is a 30 percent increase compared to last year.

According to the data reported to the Commission, sexual violence was the most dominant with a total of 1,915 cases or 54 percent. The data also recorded 952 cases (27 percent) of physical violence and 674 cases of psychological violence (19 percent).

Based on location, violence against children occurred mostly within the family household at 35 percent, followed by schools at 30 percent, the social environment at 23 percent, and the remaining 12 percent are not mentioned.

"There are still many cases of violence against children in the world of education. On a massive scale, we carry out preventive educational activities in schools, and communities and meet with children," the Child Protection Commission acting chair, Lia Latifah, said at a conference in Jakarta, on December 29, 2023.

In 2023, the Commission visited around 120 schools. They found that 16,720 students were victims of bullying, 10,314 were victims of pornography, and 9,721 kids owned pornographic content.

The Child Protection Commission is currently assisting at least five cases of violence against children. Among them are the bullying case in Bekasi, physical abuse, the murder of four children by their own father in Jagakarsa, a child custody dispute, and the death of an infant found in a baby bathtub.
