Religious Minister Tight-lipped over Involvement in Bribery Case

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin had met the summon called by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for examination as a witness in the bribery case of former United Development Party (PPP) chair Romahurmuziy.
However, Lukman remained tight-lipped over the allegation against him that he accepted Rp10 million in this case.
Lukman said that he will first deliver a statement to the investigators before making comments in media. “It’s not ethical to put words regarding the case here before I give testimony to investigators,” said the minister in the KPK building, Wednesday, May 8.

Previously, during a pretrial of Romahurmuziy, the anti-graft body team said that Lukman was suspected to obtain bribe funds from a suspect, head of Religious Affairs Ministry's East Java office Haris Hasanudin amounted to Rp10 million.
The KPK named Romahurmuziy suspect for receiving Rp300 million from Haris and head of Religious Affairs Ministry's Gresik office Muhammad Muafaq Wirahadi. The bribery was committed to approving bribers’ position as state officials during the recruitment process.
During the investigation, the KPK had searched Lukman’s office and confiscated Rp180 million and US$30,000. The minister denied the money relative to the bribe case.
