Nyepi Day to See Bali`s Ngurah Rai Airport Closed 24 Hours

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is scheduled to temporarily shut down its entire operations for 24 hours in respect for the Hindu observance of Nyepi (Day of Silence) on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

The airport’s region IV chief authority Alfi Amir announced in a written statement; “The airport’s operations will be non-active on March 7 from 06:00 central Indonesia time (WITA) and will be at service again on March 8 at 06:00 western Indonesia time (WIB).”

This condition has also been notified through notice to airmen (NOTAM) No.A5144/18 NOTAM to every international air carriers and airports across the globe.

According to the transportation ministry’s air transport directorate general, the airport located in Kuta, Bali serves 468 flights each day, with 207 of them being international flights and the rest serving domestic flights.

With 94 daily flights to the airport, State-carrier Garuda Indonesia will also stop its service to Ngurah Rai during Nyepi. In the meantime, there are 43 international flight routes canceled due to respect to Bali’s local custom which mostly originates from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Perth.
