TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police have announced that Democrat politician Andi Arief has tested positive for crystal methamphetamine, or locally known as shabu.

“We have run a urine test for AA (Andi Arief), which comes out positive for methamphetamine or shabu,” said National Police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Muhammad Iqbal on Monday, March 4, at the National Police HQ, Jakarta.

The Democrat deputy secretary-general was arrested at Menara Peninsula Hotel, Jakarta, on Sunday, March 3. The police said Andi was alone in the hotel room.

Iqbal said the police found a bong during the raid. He added, however, that the police did not find any illegal drug and had yet to know since when the suspect began abusing the drug. “The investigation is underway,” he added.

Iqbal mentioned that the police were still questioning Andi Arief at the National Police’s narcotics directorate. The police have 3x24 hours to determine Andi Arief’s legal status. However, the police suspected Andi was a victim.
