TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has disabled some of its automated teller machine (ATM) cards owned by several customers who are allegedly affected by skimming fraud. Therefore, BRI provides free card replacement services.

"To secure the customer's fund and card replacement process for the customers who are suspected to be affected by skimming," said BRI Corporate Secretary Bambang Tribaroto in a written statement received by Tempo on Saturday, March 24.

Bambang said his party has sent a short message or SMS to customers whose ATM cards will be blocked.

Notifications are also available on BRI's ATM screen and BRI's social media accounts.

"Socialization is also done through BRI employees who have been actively informing customers since two days ago," he said.

Replacement card service begins today, from 8 am to 3 pm, at BRI branch offices.

Based on Tempo observation, BRI Cut Meutia branch, Jakarta, has received dozens of customers who will replace the card. "About 40 people today," said the BRI security officer.

One of the customers, Muhatir, said he just found out his ATM card blocked today when he about to take his money. He did not get an SMS because the phone number registered with the bank has been damaged.

"When I want to take my money, it didn’t work, so I ask BRI Gambir, I was told to the branch office," he said.

When he replaced his ATM card, Muhatir said the bank clerk asked him to fill out some forms. He said the new card will be ready today. "It only took about five minutes, it's fast," he said.

Muhatir said there is a difference between the old and new card. "There's a chip on top of it, like the one on a cellphone card," he said.

Another customer, Bowo, who replace the card at BRI Tanah Abang, satisfied with the new card he received. Based on the information he received from the bank, the card is said to be safer. "Cooler than ever, durable too."
