TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration plans to provide Jakarta Smart Cards (KJP) for high school students planning to continue their studies to universities. The fund for the KJP worth Rp 1.5 million (US$109) per month for each student would be earmarked from the City Budget.
"Many students had to throw their dream to go to college because their parents cannot afford college," Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said at the City Hall on Thursday, January 28, 2016.
Therefore, Ahok said that he would like to help those students to realize their dreams.
"So, I told them not to give up. If they are accepted in public universities, I will pay for the tuition fees," Ahok said, adding that he would provide Rp 18 million (US$1,304) per year for each student.
The fund, Ahok added, could be used to pay for tuition fees, books and daily needs. Ahok explained that the KJP for university students would be prioritized for students who had received the KJP previously.
"It doesn't mean that those who are already in college will be provided with the KJP," he explained.
Ahok revealed that the number of students holding the KJP in the Capital had reached 40,000.
