TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has called on the ASEAN and international communities to resolve the issue faced by 1,039 Rohingya refugees sheltered in the northern and eastern coasts of Aceh.
“For the Rohingya refugees, the solution is resettlement. We have to work on the solution as a part of the international community,” Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indarparwansa said on Sunday, May 24, 2015 during a visit to the temporary shelter for 682 Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees at Kuala Langsa, Aceh.
According to Khofifah, the refugees might not only seek for asylum in ASEAN and Asia Pacific, but also in other countries across the world.
Therefore, Khofifah added, the international community and the United Nations need to arrange a strategic agreement in the long run to anticipate refugees in many countries.
Prior to her visit to the refugee shelter, Khofifah held a meeting with the Regional Heads Forum in Aceh to discuss the solution for the refugees and the endeavors made by Aceh residents to help the refugees.
“We’re still formulating the solution for the resettlement. We are also drafting a presidential decree on the refugees,” Khofifah added.
