TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration launched the first electronic payment system for on-street parking at Jalan Sabang, Central Jakarta on Thursday, January 29, 2015.
"There will be no more transactions using coins or paper bills. All must use electronic money," Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said during the launching ceremony.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency's Parking Unit has set to work with six major banks: BNI, Mandiri, BRI, BCA, and Bank DKI, to issue the electronic money for the new parking system. Ahok said that the electronic payment system was aimed at providing an easy an convenient way of paying parking fees.
Ahok explained that the Jakarta government has made the right decision to work with the six major banks. Earlier, he instructed Bank DKI to handle the whole project, which then failed to meet the target.
"That's why I asked other banks to take part [in the project]," he said.
