TEMPO.CO, Bandung – Head of the country’s volcano monitoring agency Muhammad Hendrasto said it was still possible that Mount Sinabung, which erupted on June 29, would erupt again. “The tremors remain, so there is a potential eruption,” he told Tempo on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.
Hendrasto said his agency was still recording tremors with an amplitude of between 3-90 mm. “So the average is 10 mm,” he said.
He added the multiple eruptions that began since late last year had opened the mountain’s system. “Because its system is now open, the eruption will not be preceded by volcanic signs,” he said.
On June 29, he went on, the mountain only erupted once, sending a 4,000-meter column of smoke and hot clouds southeastwards from the mountain’s crater as far as 4,500 meters.
He added it was possible that he next eruption would also be followed by hot clouds. “Because its system has been opened, so another eruption coupled with hot clouds can happen anytime,” he said.
