Thousands of Port Workers to Launch Protest on Labor Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Port workers under the Indonesian Port Workers Federation (FPPI) have planned to launch a protest to commemorate the World Labor Day. FPPI secretary Nova Hakim said that thousands of workers from 12 ports in Indonesia will participate in the movement.
“More than 3,000 workers will go to Tanjung Priok port to commemorate the Labor Day,” Nova Hakim said in a press release received by Tempo on Thursday, April 28, 2016.
Port workers continue to complain that they have been disadvantaged in terms of welfare.
“Moreover, outsourcing practices have resulted in salaries below the minimum wage,” Suryansyah with the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) Labor Union told Tempo on Thursday, April 28, 2016.
According to Surya, there has been a violation of Law No 13/2003 on manpower.
“The Constitutional Court ruled that core employment must not be outsourced,” Surya added.
During the rally scheduled on May 1, 2016, workers will launch a protest in Tanjung Priok port. Nova revealed that workers from various elements will demand state-owned port operator PT Pelindo to conduct a reform.
