TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Senior lawyer Maqdir Ismail said that the revision of the law on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) was necessary since no institution had been established to supervise the anti-graft commission.

“It’s necessary in our government system. The revision is aimed at reinforcing the KPK. Take a look at how they run things. There’s no control from any institutions,” Maqdir said in a discussion in Jakarta on Saturday, February 13, 2016.

According to Maqdir, the establishment of a supervisory council will make KPK serving its functions, particularly those related to tapping operations, in an orderly manner.

“All this time, they immediately conduct a tapping operation whenever there is a report. Many of those operations did not provide any results. A supervisory council would make the operation more effective,” Maqdir argued.

Maqdir added that revising the point on the letter of order to stop investigation (SP3) was also necessary. For example, the SP3 would be necessary for the corruption case entangling Bambang W. Soeharto who came to the court without being able to move and was aided with respiratory equipment.

However, Maqdir clarified that the KPK law revision must be supported with revisions of other laws, such as the Criminal Code (KUHP) and the Criminal Law Procedures Code (KUHAP) to reinforce all law enforcers.
