TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said, said that the 35,000 Mega Watt (MW) Project for Indonesia - which had recently been officially launched by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo - will directly absorb some 650,000 individuals into the workforce.
"This government initiative will provide jobs and livelihood for at least 650,000 workers," said Said at the launch of the program in Gua Cemara Beach in Bantul, Yogyakarta on Monday, April 4, 2015.
In addition to that, according to Said, related infrastructure projects will indirectly provide jobs for at least 3 million people, apart from assisting the government's effort to provide electricity to meet the national demand in the next five years.
"If one worker is able to provide livelihood for four members of his or her household, then at least 20 million people will benefit from the program," said Said, before adding that the program will also boost economic activities across the nation, because the 210 power plants that will be built under the program will be spread across Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and other areas across Eastern Indonesia.
"Seventy five thousand towers will be constructed, wherein 300,000 aluminium conductors, 2,600 sets of transformators, and 3.5 tonnes of steel will be used," said Said.
As such, Said calls on all stakeholders to participate in the program, which will collectively develop and benefit Indonesia's energy sector. "The project will require Rp 1,100 trillion to finance until completion, which means that a lot of stakeholders could participate in this collective effort," he said.
