TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The district administration of Tanah Laut, South Kalimantan, will generate electricity using bio-energy from oil palm shells.

Tanah Laut Regent H Bambang Alamsyah said a power plant will be built using bio-energy from oil palm shells with an assistance form the energy and mineral resources ministry.

Bambang said the energy and mineral resource ministry has offered assistance to build a megawatt capacity power plant in the district.

He said the power plant is expected to cope with shortage in power supply in that district.

"We will soon follow up with the offer by preparing land for the project," he said on Friday.

He said he is confident the project would be a success.

"Energy crisis would affect economic development, therefore, attempt should continue to develop renewable energy," he said.
