Thousands of Indonesian Women Become International Drug Dealers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anti-narcotics Agency (BNN) director Comr. Gen. Anang Iskandar said there had been 4,297 Indonesian women who were involved in drug-dealing cases in 2014. Anang said most of them were tricked into being couriers.
"It is pathetic. Indonesian women are easily manipulated by narcotics syndicates," Anang said during the commemoration event of Mothers' Day at the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)'s central executive board office on Monday, December 22, 2014.
Anang said there were over four million people involved in narcotics in the country, adding that women had often been deceived into involvement at the offer of financial rewards.
"The general MO is that they tricked into marriage or love relationships and being offered international trip tickets," said Anang.
He added that Indonesia remained a hot bed for narcotics distribution. Narcotics addicts cannot be charged with the criminal law. The law orders that they should be rehabilitated. Only when they are both addicts and dealers can they be charged," he said.
