TEMPO.CO, Surakarta - The Surakarta administration has collaborated with the Indonesian Keroncong Musician Association (Hamkri) in Surakarta to hold the fifth Solo Keroncong Festival 2013 from September 13 to 14. This time, the committee aims at displaying keroncong music performances from a different angle.
"We want to experiment with keroncong music," said Hamkri Surakarta’s deputy chairman, Wartono.
One of the ways the committee plans to experiment is by requesting participants of the festival to play their keroncong music according to the traditional ways of their respective regions. Wartono is certain that keroncong music differs per area.
Another experiment will include inviting guest musicians from other music genres to collaborate, such as Mel Sandy, an Indonesian rock musician.
"We want to see whether a marriage between keroncong and rock music can work," said Wartono.
Fifteen keroncong music groups are scheduled to perform tonight from various cities aside from Surakarta, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Jombang, Sawalunto, Denpasar and Palembang. The opening ceremony will be held at the Surakarta City Hall tonight at 19.30 local time.
Wartono hopes a huge crowd will turn up at this free event to show that Surakarta really is the city ofkeroncong.
