TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that Mount Anak Krakatau (the child of Krakatoa) in Lampung had erupted on Saturday, August 18, at 18:09 Western Indonesian Time.
According to the BMKG, the eruption created a 500-meter-high ash cloud or 850 meters above sea level. This data was acquired by the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) at the Anak Krakatau monitoring post.
The thick black ash cloud is seen traveling more towards the North. The seismograph at the monitoring post recorded a 42mm amplitude with a duration lasting up to 2 minutes and 33 seconds.
The Mount Anak Krakatau is currently remains at the Level II status or alert. Residents are highly advised not to be any closer than 2 kilometers from the mountain’s crater. Despite the mountain’s increased activities, PVMBG announced that the air space above is not yet affected by the ash cloud.
