TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The sudden decrease in funds on dozens of BRI customers' accounts at Ngadiluwih, Kediri has gained people intentions over the days. Based on the recent investigation, the case was allegedly due to theft using a method called skimming.
Bali Police Cyber Crime Unit Chief I Wayan Wisnawa explained, skimming, a method used by criminals to capture data from the magnetic stripe on the back of a debit, credit, or ATM card has fallen many victims. Wisnawa outlined five tips to be applied by bank’s client to help avoid card skimming.
1. First, be aware while typing PIN code because the scammers sometimes installed a hidden camera to find out user’s password.
2. Second, avoid the ATM in a quite or dim area where the scammers easily installed skimming tools in such unsecured place.
3. Third, check the account balance regularly, had there be a strange withdrawal, quickly report to the bank.
4. Forth, do not continuously access the account. The more people use ATM, the more likely fall victim to ATM scam.
5. The fifth way to avoid ATM skimming is to register every transaction by using two authentification ways in the account.
Skimmers usually spotted tourism destination where most visited by foreign tourist including Bali, NTB, and Jakarta. Particularly in Bali, Wisnawa stated, Bali Police Cyber Crime Directorate formed a joint anti-cybercrime task force to minimize the criminal act regarding skimming card.
