TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sumartoyo, head of HR and R&D division at the Judicial Commission (KY), said on Thursday, October 19, that his institution would soon follow up a report in relation to a legal mechanism violation allegedly committed by Judge Cepi who handled Setya Novanto’s pretrial hearing.
According to Sumartoyo, Setya Novanto’s lawyers sought a judge who would not care about promotion and could be manipulated. He claimed that he had contacted individuals to watch the judge's appointment process.
Before the pretrial hearing, Sumartoyo admitted that he suggested a fresh judge to handle the case. However, Judge Cepi was appointed ahead of the hearing session.
Sumartoyo did not deny that Setya Novanto had connections and could influence many people.
“With his influence, the KY could not do much. Everyone knows that [Judge Cepi’s] decision is peculiar. How come he rejected strong evidence [to name Setya Novanto as a suspect]? This is a strong indication that there was something wrong,” he said in Semarang on Thursday, October 19.
Sumartoyo promised that he would soon investigate the case, although he could not confirm when he would summons Judge Cepi. He will also ensure that the individuals who filed the report remain anonymous.
