TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some 75 judges will be joining the Indonesia Film Festival (FFI) 2017 panel. Earlier last year, 100 judges were involved in the voting system. FFI 2017 lead judge Riri Riza has revealed the reason behind the change.
“It’s very challenging. Many have complained because, of 100 judges, many had admitted to not having watched all films,” Riza told Tempo recently.
Riza said that in the end, 100 judges were recruited only to meet the panel quota. “This year, we are determined to improve the judging system,” he added.
The selection of judges was left to the association, he said. After that, he will offer agreements and contract offer to 75 judges and demand accountability from them. “In the sense that [they will] actually watch all films and give their vote,” he said.
Considering that the judges are busy themselves, the FFI 2017 organizer has joined hands with theater networks to screen nominated films twice to allow the judges to pick between two separate screen time. Riri also expects that a more transparent mechanism will make judges even more enthusiastic to do their best.
