TEMPO.CO, Banten - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi did not mention illegal weapon procurement when speaking at the celebration of the 72nd Indonesian Military (TNI) anniversary in Cilegon Banten, today, Oct. 5. Instead, the president addressed the state unity and the TNI’s neutrality.
“As mandated by the Semesta Defense Doctrine upheld by the TNI, [the military’s duties] are to maintain the political and security stability and to build international community’s trust in our country,” Jokowi said.

Jokowi pointed out that maintain the unity and stability in a country is not an easy task, since threats against the county could come from anywhere and in any forms.
“We must not let our guard down. We have to unite. The TNI and other government institutions, as well as all state components, must work together and help each other,” Jokowi suggested.

In terms of the Military’s neutrality in politics, Jokowi quoted late Gen. Sudirman saying that the military’s loyalty is only for the state. In other words, the president said, the TNI must defend the people’s interest and be loyal to the legitimate government.
