Car Free Day Not Yet Effective To Cut Pollution in Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Car Free Day (CFD) has been implemented since 2005 in Jakarta. However, it is not considered effective yet to improve the quality of air in the capital city.
Committee for the Phasing Out of Leaded Fuel (KPBB) executive director Ahmad Safrudin stated that the implementation of CFD has not been able to change people’s predisposition to use motorized vehicles.
"CFD is considered a success if there is a change in people’s lifestyle to use public transportation or non-motorized vehicles," he said on Friday(22/9).
He continued that CFD has been implemented in Sudirman–Thamrin areas for more than 10 years. The impact is not significant since the pollution is only reduced in the areas. Road side measurement cannot represent the quality of air in Jakarta in general. "Pollution in Sudirman-Thamrin goes down, but it increases in Casablanca during CFD,” Ahmad said.
